While both of those things might appeal, it’s not a sustainable approach to wellness - more of a once in a while type of thing.

For lots of us the logistics of taking a week off can trigger more stress than the holiday itself. Meanwhile, our wellbeing is something we need to manage all the time, which is why short, regular, meaningful breaks with the feel-good-factor of a holiday can be so powerful. Our recommendation is to use the pool and thermal facilities first, and then schedule your treatment for the late afternoon so you can leave the products on your skin and then revel in that warm, sleepy feeling that comes from being deeply relaxed afterwards.

After your treatment, take time to simply be - maybe you want to flick through a magazine in the relaxation room, take a gentle stroll around the spa gardens, or snooze by the pool and watch the world go by - there’s no pressure to do anything and that can take a little getting used to!

Then make sure you have time to enjoy a light, nourishing meal - we’re always starving after spa and treatment time, and hotel spas offer beautiful menus so you can feel as though you’re being supported from the inside out. Chances are by this time you will also be tired - try to resist the urge to watch television or catch up on emails - if your mind is still active, try reading before bed or meditating on the view from your room, focusing on your breathing before an early night.

Consolidating the feel-good-factor

The morning before you head home is about transitioning back to reality without shocking your system - remember, you’re still on your spa break so try to stop any intrusive thoughts in their tracks and enjoy the moment. Wake up slowly and take the time to enjoy breakfast. If you can, spend an hour swimming or walking in the gardens to feel as though you’ve extended your stay, rather than simply rushing off. Before checking out, take 10 minutes to really be aware of how your body feels, creating a mental picture that you can recall when stressful feelings inevitably return at some point.

What to prioritise when time is limited

When you only have one night, trying to do too much is counterproductive. To protect your peace, focus on what you are doing rather than what you aren’t. For example:
