Spotlight on Retreat East
In the idyllic Suffolk countryside, Retreat East is a sustainable retreat where 'the Good Life' meets modern hospitality on a former dairy farm - here's what you need to know.
Read full postFrom its dreamy lavender courtyard to its North Yorkshire hospitality, there's a wealth of reason to visit the Bridge Hotel & Spa, but here's a few of our favourites.
The hotel takes its name from the 12th-century bridge crossing the nearby River Nidd, and is a nod to its former guise as a coaching station for stagecoaches in the 1800s. Even the spa takes inspiration from the past, and the nearby spa town, Harrogate, famed for its reputedly healing ‘chalybeate’ or iron infused waters discovered in the 16th-century. Look carefully, and you can still see that heritage reflected in the hotel's architecture, even though rooms and suites are all about contemporary style.
The immediate grounds of the hotel set the scene for rest and relaxation, with pretty gardens extending to the natural beauty of the North Yorkshire countryside. This also makes it a wonderful location for exploring the surrounding area, whether you head into Harrogate for tea at Betty's, discover 325 million year-old rock formations in the Yorkshire Dales National Park or roam the ruins of the Cistercian monastery at Fountains Abbey.
Yorkshire's reputation for warm hospitality is not without reason and it's embodied in The Bridge Hotel & Spa. Known for their 'nothing is too much trouble' attitude, staff greet you with a smile, helping you to instantly unwind.
The spa offers a range of facilities that flow between the inside and the surrounding gardens. Spend time in the hanging chairs in the Lavender Courtyard, soak in the outdoor hot tub, enjoy the Nordic barrel sauna, rasul mud room, apple wood sauna, eucalyptus crystal steam room, drench shower, Japanese foot spas and more. Then settle in for a treatment or two using products from the Natural Spa Factory.
At the end of the day, food is something we're all eager to enjoy, and The Bridge Hotel & Spa doesn't disappoint. Continuing with a historic theme, it has oak beams, high ceilings and traditional décor, while local food and drink are the order of the day. The Byron Whisky Bar is an ode to the famous romantic rogue, and is complete with 250 year old oak panelling and an original Inglenook fireplace – the perfect place to relax.
