Read full postMums and daughters have been divided over the last year, so making the most of time together, our very own Senior Commercial Executive, Emma, took her mum to Old Thorns Golf and Country Estate for quality time on a mother-daughter spa break.
Once spas re-opened, mum and I decided to book a mother-daughter spa break last-minute, and with so much booked up so quickly we found a treatment-only experience alongside the hotel stay. We will just have to use it as a good excuse to return again and experience the facilities as well!
As the room check in was 4pm we didn’t have to rush to get there, which set a nice, relaxed tone for the day.
On arrival, it was helpful to find plenty of parking and a clearly laid out pathway as you walk into the hotel directing people around a one-way system in light of Covid-secure measures. There’s also hand sanitiser everywhere, screens at reception and at the time of visiting, everyone wore masks in communal areas - so it all felt very secure.
We took our luggage straight to our room after check-in, changed and headed to the spa area for our treatments. Our room was a really spacious twin room, with a beautiful bathroom. The water pressure in the shower was great, which I always feel is important!
In the spa there’s a lovely seating area for teas, coffees and water, as well as an outside relaxation space, which was great as weather was lovely and a good place to take your mask off. Pre-treatment, we sat there and a therapist came to get us when it was time for our treatments.
Both of us thought our treatments were wonderful, and in particular the care and attention the therapists took to personalise it. I suffer with hormonal acne and after I had filled in my consultation form my therapist talked me through a lot of things and gave me a number of products recommendations. Then she used products that suited my skin in my 25-minute facial. She was very empathetic about skin and very kind, and it did feel soothed afterwards. My mum also had a facial and, being older, had a very different experience that was tailored to her skin
I had to wear my mask when going into my treatment, but took it off during. My therapist kept hers on the whole time. Everything was very hygienic, as it always is. Afterwards, we went to sit outside for a bit in the sunshine and had a drink.
I felt as though the team managed the spa space extremely well - there were never too many people there at once, in fact, when we were in the relaxation room we were the only ones in there. They have the booking system in place so will never feel overcrowded, but other than that it felt pretty normal.
We had dinner at 7.30, which was a carvery with plenty of different meats. It wasn’t table service, but we did order drinks at table, before joining a well organised queuing system where people were serving each item, so again it was all very hygienic. The food was lovely and we really enjoyed it.
After dinner we went to the Atrium Bar, which is a charming champagne bar - it’s all deep blues and purples and velvet finishes, decorated with objets d’arts and plenty of talking points. We had a cocktail each, which you order via an app. That was a lovely environment. It would make a great place to spend time if you’re visiting with friends.
In the morning, breakfast was also a buffet for continental items, but table service for cooked food. Again, there was a one way system in place to keep it Covid-secure. Breakfast is served in a lovely, light area in restaurant overlooking part of the golf course (which is a big part of the location for many), so in the sunshine it was particularly nice.
