Top 10 alfresco spas

The summer is here and we’re optimistic that the weather is going to let us spend as much time as possible outside, so in that spirit here are our top 10 spas for dining, spa-ing and generally being the alfresco way…

Y Spa

Y Spa, Bedford

Nestled into beautiful Bedfordshire within easy reach of London, Y Spa is a contemporary favourite amongst Spabreakers thanks to its high standards, great service and perfect pricing.  The hotel’s Waterfront restaurant overlooks the estate’s south lake which is warm, friendly, award-winning and, you guessed it, has space outside with a view when the weather is right…

The Greenway, Gloucestershire

With rural vistas of glorious Gloucestershire countryside, The Greenway is a tranquil little haven where The Garden restaurant has views over the sunken garden and lily pond providing the perfect backdrop for the 16th century manor house with space to roam in the summer sun.  The piece de resistance on this occasion however is the alfresco hot tub!

Moddershall Oaks, Staffordshire

In 73 acres of countryside, the grounds at Moddershall Oaks are perfect for cycling, strolling or simply viewing.  Woodland walks and trail maps are available, as well as outdoor tennis courts and a brand new outdoor spa courtyard including relaxation lounge.  There’s a spa deli, 25 square metre heated vitality spa pool and a kelo sauna.

Rockliffe Hall, County Durham

Rockliffe Hall is spectacular at any time of the year, but after recent renovation they have introduced a whole new alfresco facility that’s a joy to explore this summer.  The beautiful outdoor area has two hot pools including an infinity pool, a Jacuzzi, and lounging area surrounded by landscaped gardens and spectacular views - bliss!

Tylney Hall, Hampshire

In 66 acres of parkland, the views at Tylney Hall are spectacular and ideal for picnics in the summer!  The historic building is utterly romantic and reminiscent of a scene from Jane Austen.  Outside there is a pool sheltered by a walled garden, a tennis court, jogging trails, mountain bike hire, and a croquet lawn - all waiting to be explored!

Fawsley Hall, Northamptonshire

The gardens at Fawsley Hall oscillate between neat lawns and rural parkland.  Stretching into the horizon, they are perfect for a gentle stroll or for exploring a number of the walking trails.  The spa is in a separate building to the hotel, so you need to head outside to get there anyway.  Once there, take advantage of the  outdoor hydro pool and Nordic walking sessions for a different take on fitness in this achingly beautiful part of the world.

Ellenborough Park, Gloucestershire

Ellenborough Park is all about country living.  So you can borrow wellies and a jacket to wander around the 90 acres of grounds, or do it the relaxed way in the adult only spa with its beautiful heated outdoor pool.

Ardencote, Warwickshire

Surrounding the converted Victorian coach house that is Ardencote and its wealth of indoor facilities, the hotel has an adult only outdoor swimming pool and hot tub.  On the edge of its own lake, the landscaped gardens are also worth exploring, complete with rose and knot gardens where you can dine or have afternoon tea in the sunshine, surrounded by aromatic lavender beds.

Homewood Park, Avon

Surrounded by beautiful Devon countryside, Homewood Park is luxurious, romantic and contemporary in the spa, in contrast to the historic hotel building.  The spa is surrounded by an original garden wall and herbs that attract the honey bees in the summer months, and the heated outdoor pool is a remarkable place to spend time in the sun such is its unique design.

Oban bay hotel hot tub, couple looking over the bay

Crerar Oban Bay, Scotland

With mountain and sea views Crerar Oban Bay is the embodiment of escapism, renowned for its beautiful gardens, views, ocean promenade, ancient relics, and huge range of outdoor activities.  Perhaps our favourite feature for taking it all in however, is the outdoor hot tub, once again with views across the bay.
