In Hatfield Heath in Essex, it's easy to get to Down Hall Hotel & Spa by road or public transport. For those who are driving, exit the M11 at Junction 7A and follow signs for Sheering. Continue through Sheering to Hatfield Heath. From Hatfield Heath, take Matching Road, Down Hall Hotel is located approximately 1.5 miles along Matching Road, clearly signposted on the right. By rail, from London Liverpool Street take the Greater Anglia train to Cambridge, or the Stansted Express Train. Alight at either Harlow Town or Bishop's Stortford. From Tottenham Hale Greater Anglia operates direct trains from Tottenham Hale to Harlow Town, with journey times around 20 minutes. From Bishop's Stortford Station or Harlow Town Station it's approximately 15 minutes by taxi to the hotel.

When was Down Hall Hotel & Spa built?

The manor of Down Hall was in existence during the reign of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), one of 10 medieval manors in the Parish of Hatfield Broad Oak that were already considered ancient at the time. Its illustrious history spans the centuries and the nobility, but in the 1300s Robert Taper took possession and undertook renovations. In the 1700s Charles Selwin took down the Tudor dwelling and rebuilt as a handsome, substantial manner, completed in 1777, though some original Tudor fireplace mantels and door surrounds were retained. In 1914 Down Hall became a hospital for the war years, and was then a school for girls in the 1930s. It was a conference centre for a time in the 1960s, before being bought by Veladail Hotels in 1986, and transformed into a country house hotel.
