What is it?
‘Qi’ is the Chinese word for breath, energy, vital force, air, or life power. The word ‘Gong’ implies a regular, systematic, intense, long term, and dedicated training regimen. Therefore, ‘Qigong’ is a long term training program to circulate, cultivate, regulate, enhance, and guide vital internal energies to achieve health, vitality, and spiritual awareness.
How does it improve your health?
Qigong exercises are intended to improve health, increase energy, revitalize the body and mind, prevent or control disease, tone the internal organs, improve balance, reduce stress, boost the immune system, remove toxins, tone the muscles and tendons, promote bone strength and structural alignment, calm the mind, contribute to longevity, and provide an integrated mind-body practice leading towards greater balance and peace of mind. Importantly, and a key part of its appeal is that it can be practiced by anyone of any age.
Why do you think it has stood the test of time?
Qigong exercises are simple and easy to learn and have stood the test of time because firstly they have been handed down from generation to generation in China as a part of the Taoist belief system that is so prevalent in the country; secondly because many people have experienced its amazing benefits both physically and psychologically; and thirdly, the movements are often taught in traditional Chinese hospitals as a way of recovering from illness and operations.
Top Tips for beginners?
Practice and persevere. The exercises should be practiced everyday to experience the full health benefits.
