He Says/ She Says … Carton House Hotel

A country house hotel just outside Dublin, Carton House dates back to 1739 and boasts Queen Victoria and Grace Kelly amongst its former guests, but what did the boys from Your Golf Travel , and the girls from Spabreaks.com think of it?

What did you like most about Carton House Hotel?

He Says: The great contrasts from the period facade to the modern luxury amenities and fittings throughout. It is a deluxe property which you might associate with a sense of ‘stuffyness’ and yet the bars and restaurants had a really welcoming atmosphere. Of course, as a golfer the two courses were my main reason for visiting and they didn’t disappoint.

She Says: I loved the bedrooms, so spacious and luxurious! The bed linen was incredible; I had the best nights sleep there.

What did you think of the spa?

He Says: Although my time was spent very much on the golf courses, the swim, sauna and steam I had after each round were excellent. There aren’t many better ways to unwind after a quick drink or two in the clubhouse than a couple of hours of down time in a spa.

She Says: The relaxation room was one of the best I have come across,  with huge beds to settle into and read a magazine, or just relax after your treatment. The spa facilities include a Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and pool, so there is something for everyone to enjoy.

How was the golf course?

He Says: There are two courses at Carton House, both of which are a great test for all players and handicaps. I’d probably say, for me at least, I enjoyed the O’Meara slightly more than the Montgomerie, but in hindsight that was probably down to my many lost balls on the Monty in the high rough! I spent much of my round here in the bunkers as well … there are tonnes of them!

She Says: Unfortunately my time was spent poolside, not out on the putting greens!

What’s the restaurant like?

He Says: Perfect for me; there was a great selection on the menu, excellent wine choices and while it might be cliché, there is a unique feeling to drinking a pint of Guinness in Ireland. As they say the black stuff tastes better the closer you are to Dublin so I had my fair share at Carton House!

She Says: My favourite meal during my stay was breakfast, in full Irish tradition. The pastry selection, fresh fruits, and cereal were high above the normal hotel standard.

What else is there to do at Carton House Hotel?

He Says: The grounds are extensive so a walk around the hotel with the better half is recommended. To be honest, I think for most the combination of spa, golf and an excess of food and drink will provide all you need for a weekend break!

She Says: The town of Maynooth is only a short drive away and has many things to enjoy including a nightclub, pubs, and shops!

Who would you recommend it for?

He Says: I would say that this is the perfect place for a couple looking for a weekend golf and spa break. It’s so easy to get to from Dublin, Dublin Airport and Dun Laoghaire Harbour, so convenient as well as a great place to relax and get away from it all.

She Says: The rural setting, but still being so close to Dublin city, makes it a perfect location for any couple looking for a romantic getaway, but still wanting to be close to a nightlife and shopping.

What is your top tip for visiting Carton House Hotel?

He Says: I’d recommend allowing yourself a few hours to enjoy the atmosphere which builds in The Coach House. With a mix of golfers finishing their rounds and residents just popping down for a drink it is a fun place to tell tales of your round and sample a pint or two of the famous black drink associated with the Emerald Isle.

She Says:  Take some time to explore the surrounding area, Ireland is a beautiful place to spend time!
