Providing something for everyone from parties to families, spa reviewer, Emma, visits Fota Island Resort in Ireland for an unrivalled breakfast and a bit of a giggle in the hydrotherapy pool!
As you head for Fota Island Resort you feel you are leaving the town and entering a secluded place. Golf is an obvious theme but so is the natural woodland around the resort. The Island is wooded and green with bluebells under the trees while the architecture is modern and large with lots of space.
The hotel comprises a large complex which caters to many types of visitor. Staff are extremely helpful and professional, the communal space is quite dark with dark floors and furnishings but the guest rooms are large and light. The golfing theme is quite strong, especially if you take a stroll around the grounds, while inside the design and architecture come into their own in the spa, which feels spacious and luxurious with a well maintained environment.
The bar, where the food is a little cheaper, is also rather busy, so seating is limited. We had afternoon tea here, which was really good featuring simple food with a flourish and plenty of staff serving catering to your needs. The main restaurant was a little pricier and a bit quieter and the food is amazing with an extremely high standard of service and huge portions; no one rushed us or ignored us despite the late hour that we were dining. The breakfast was also stunning. We were warmly greeted in the main dining room by a sea of colour and fresh, local produce. The staff were happy to inform you that all the breakfast buffet and a la carte was available and unlimited … some guests were still eating breakfast at midday!
Peaceful, well fitted, clean and bright are the first adjectives that strike you in the spa. The hydrotherapy pool is the focal point of the space and is great fun even though the jets and bubbles do their level best to either tickle you or blow your costume off! That just made for a happy environment though as lots of people were giggling and that was infectious!
Fota Island Resort is a big venue that caters for families, girly groups, golfing parties, couples, weddings, parties – everyone really! The central feature really is the spa and the service is of an extremely high standard as well as being within a reasonable budget.
– Great for a big group who need a base.
– Eat one of everything at breakfast (even if it’s at the expense of having lunch if you’re too full afterwards, it’s worth it!)
– Try the main restaurant; it’s a little expensive, but worth the experience!
