On a weekend away, new mum and dad, Donna and Tony find peace and quiet in the luxurious surroundings of Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire!
The approach to the mansion house and the pavilion was breathtaking. Even on a damp and drizzly autumn morning the grounds looked stunning, with the green of the golf course on our right and the sparkling lake to our left. On entering the pavilion (the more modern addition to the estate housing the leisure facilities and spa accommodation), we were greeted by the friendly reception staff, who were polite and helpful and took us on a brief tour of the facilities. We were immediately able to relax and look forward to a (much needed) stress-free weekend, in beautiful surroundings.
As with the spa staff, the hotel receptionists were polite and most helpful. Check-in was quick and efficient. We were provided with our weekend itinerary and shown to our room. We stayed in the junior suite, which was spectacular. The décor was bold, but subtle and appropriate for the size of the room. The lounge area had a comfy sofa and a great sized TV. The tea and coffee making facilities were excellent, with a large variety of teas and coffees on offer; as coffee lovers we were particularly pleased to see a Nespresso machine with a selection of pods to choose from. The bathroom was huge and well equipped with a separate bath and shower, his ‘n hers sinks, and plenty of towels and toiletries to see us through the weekend. The bed was enormous, to the point where we could have done with a map to meet in the middle! The room was clean and tidy and we were pleasantly surprised when we returned to the suite after dinner to find that the bed had been turned down and the tea and coffees replenished.
The spa area is spacious and relaxing, although the number of facilities on offer is limited. The atrium was large and housed a grand fish tank; it was a perfect room to meet up in as other than the swimming pool it was the only indoor facility available for us to enjoy together as a couple as the saunas and steam rooms are in the changing areas and are therefore separate for men and women – but as with everything they were beautifully done and worth spending time in. The swimming pool was a good size but you need to arrive early to grab a lounger as there are not very many around the edge. Finally, the treatments were as relaxing as you would expect and the massage was a great way to unwind before dinner.
Humphrey’s restaurant is located in the mansion, with views across the lake and the Repton bridge. It is cosy and intimate, the staff are polite and attentive, and the menu imaginative. Our starters and main courses were fantastically presented and cooked to perfection while the deserts were divine and a mouth-watering way to end our meal. Breakfast was served in the restaurant in the pavilion, and had a much more relaxed atmosphere, however, this did not affect the level of service we received or the quality of the food that was provided.
The grounds surrounding the pavilion and mansion house are spectacular and well kept. The golfing greens stretch to the horizon in all directions, and the peace and tranquility of the setting is only disrupted by the occasional plane on its way in and out of Heathrow. The church, manor house, and monuments within the grounds add to the picturesque and historic ambience of the location.
Stoke Park is an amazing venue. The buildings are grand, the grounds spectacular, and the history of the property is thoroughly absorbing. The spa, although limited in terms of facilities, still provided a relaxing environment for the weekend away. The rooms are incredible, as are the restaurants. We would highly recommend Stoke Park for a luxurious nights break – or longer if you are able!
– Treat yourself to a treatment. There is a wide variety available, something to suit everyone and they are a great way to relax and immerse yourself in the spa experience.
– Take time to do the Heritage Walk. The scenery is spectacular and the memorial gardens are beautiful and well worth a stroll around on a sunny morning.
– Take a watch into the spa. The only clock is in the pool area which you can’t see from the Atrium, and you don’t want to miss that treatment you have booked!
