Golf Guide: Praia D’El Rey

Praia-Sunset

As good fortune would have it, many beautiful spa locations also happen to stand alongside some pretty impressive golf courses, adding another dimension to a getaway or short break.  Here, Your Golf Travel (who know about these things) explain everything you need to know about Praia D’El Rey  …

Getting There: Praia D’El Rey is located about an hour’s drive north of Lisbon, which is well serviced from all of London’s airports with the flight taking just over two-and-a-half hours – perfect for a long weekend.

When to Go: With year-round sunshine you can escape to this gorgeous part of the world for some mild relief from the cold winter months, and despite a chance of rain, the winter temperatures are optimal for a comfortable round if you prefer to steer clear of the summer crowds.  October in particular averages around 20 degrees Celsius, making it perfect weather for golf.

Who to Take: With a variety of accommodation options ranging from the Marriott hotel to luxury villas and beachfront townhouses, Praia D’El Rey is suitable for groups, couples and families. If you are travelling with kids, this is probably the best place to stay in the region.

Favourite Feature: Praia D’El Rey’s signature golf holes – 13, 14 and 15 – run along the Atlantic coastline, providing fantastic views of the sea, dunes and back towards the pine forest. The course was recently rated the seventh best in Europe by Golf World magazine, while the International Association of Golf Tour Operators voted Praia D’El Rey the best on the continent.

Recommended For … Those seeking a less touristy experience than that in the south, without sacrificing the quality of golf, the outstanding beaches or spectacular surroundings. If you want egg and chips and late boozy nights in English bars, you’ll probably find the Algarve more your cup of tea. But if you prefer the unspoiled views of a rural area which still looks like Portugal, this should be to your liking. The combination of a superb championship golf course with the state-of-the-art Kalyan Spa & Fitness centre makes this a popular haven for couples.

Top Tips:

– Choose a sea view room and enjoy the wonderful sunsets over the Atlantic ocean.

– The resort is somewhat isolated with the nearest town (Obidos) about a 20 minute drive away. It’s worth hiring a car if you wish to explore the surrounding region and its array of beaches and restaurants.

– Ask for a breakfast inclusive rate. The breakfast buffet offers a vast selection of Portuguese pastries, cold cuts, local cheeses and sausages, on top of your traditional English breakfast buffet and omelette station. And all can be enjoyed from the restaurant, or outside on the terrace with sweeping views over the grounds and ocean. What better start to a golfing day?
