From the outside Apex Waterloo Place Hotel is a very traditional building in keeping with the historic nature of Edinburgh, but once you step inside it is a whole different story – cool, calm, and utterly cosmopolitan.
It’s a small hotel but the rooms are extremely spacious, particularly for a city hotel. Again, it is modern with all the details you would expect; flat screen TVs, coffee makers, WIFI, and in the upgraded rooms there are DVDs available as well. The beds are massive and seriously comfortable, resulting in the best night’s sleep I can remember in a long time, and in my particular room the bath enjoyed a view of the city, which complemented the Elemis products set out on the side for you when you arrive … which set the tone perfectly for the rest of my evening.
The spa is a small, boutique affair with just a few treatment rooms using Elemis products (the fact that these are included in your room to extend the spa experience is a supremely lovely touch). The treatment rooms are cosy and have little jewellery boxes for you to put your bits and pieces into while you have your massage/ facial etc. I had the Scalp, Neck, and Shoulder Soother with Hot Stones which is always going to be a winning combo, and at the end they ring a little bell to bring you gently out of your stupor. The rest of the spa continues to be small but perfectly formed – there is an Ozone pool surrounded by natural light, a sauna, and a steam room – all very intimate and quiet and designed for sitting and allowing time to drift past.
Breakfast in particular is a feast. All the traditional Scottish trimmings are available if you want them, and it is beautifully presented both visually and in terms of the first class service. Make sure you leave time to savour your experience and bring an appetite.
It’s in the most perfect location as far as city breaks go. In the centre of Edinburgh it’s just five minutes on foot to the train station making a thorough exploration of the shops and nightlife an easy part of your visit.
Whether it’s a romantic getaway or a girly trip, Apex Waterloo Place Hotel makes for an ideal city break thanks to its central location. The spa in particular is wonderful for anyone who is new to the whole experience as therapists are brilliant at explaining what is going to happen in the treatment and then talking through the products they used and any recommendations at the end – a particular trademark of Elemis.
