The hotel and spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel are in two separate buildings a short walk from one another. As you arrive you drive past the stables which are set to be a key feature thanks to the hotel’s location in the horse racing town of Newmarket. There is a definite sense that this is a place where you are going to feel wonderfully expensive.
When you walk into the hotel you are greeted by modern design with the building itself split between the original house and a contemporary extension. Moving on to your rooms takes you to your own little sanctuary complete with everything from Tea Pigs tea (if you haven’t tried it yet, now’s your chance!) and Molton Brown bath and shower products.
In a separate building to the accommodation, even the walkway up to the spa is beautiful, as it is graced with a trellis that blooms in the summertime. It has separate parking to the hotel, so day spa guests can head straight there, and once inside you are greeted by a supremely elegant environment that’s all white, complete with comfy chairs to sink into with a good book. It is an over-18’s only spa, as there are separate leisure facilities for families in the hotel, and it has a hydro pool, sauna, steam room, bucket shower, experience shower, and ice fountain to keep you entertained. On an upstairs level there is a supremely beautiful relaxation area where you wait to have your treatments courtesy of ESPA. Here, the seating is adorned with flowing silk drapes, cosy covers, and fleecy blankets, as well as leading to an outdoor hot tub. Robes and flip flops are provided so you can walk around all the different areas with ease.
The restaurant and bar are in the older part of the hotel, with the bar characterised by a log fire and armchairs in a quintessentially British manner. Food in the restaurant is beautifully presented (the apple tarte tatin came amidst a flourish of blue flames to add a little glamour to the evening). We were particular fans of the chunky chips – you can’t beat a good chip! The spa also has its own restaurant for lunch, so you really can spend the whole day there without having to come back to the hotel.
An easy drive from London or Cambridge, and just a 10 minute walk from Newmarket town centre, while the hotel itself does not have extensive grounds, the stables outside and the surrounding training grounds for the traditional horse racing scene create a sense of high-end country escapism that even Jilly Cooper would be proud of!
The spa at Bedford Lodge is especially beautiful and really is a place where you can spend all day with your robe on, simply chilling out. It’s ideal for couples; as an adult-only environment the sense of romance is uninterrupted, and there is a dual treatment room for those wanting to have their massages etc at the same time. Nonetheless, it’s also a lovely place that’s well suited to a day away with friends, or mums and daughters – it’s pretty much got all bases covered!
– If you are staying overnight, upgrade your room to a suite, especially if it’s a special occasion.
– Take a good book and settle into the spa for the whole day – you need never get out of your dressing gown!
– Order chips! They were a real favourite!
