A spa therapist who’s going that extra mile in the name of relaxation, The Celtic Therapist, Melissa Mainwaring talks about massage candles, soya wax, and Zooey Deschanel. Think you know the #NextBigThing? Nominate them to appear on The Hot Tub @spabreaks!
What are you up to at the moment?
I am currently expanding my recent hobby into a cottage industry. I work by day as a spa sales consultant and by night as a candle maker and product creator. I am promoting eco soya scented candles as gifts for yourself or for others with added personalisation.
Where did the idea for your massage candles?
I am a fully qualified massage therapist by trade and have always had a passion for candles. I have been forever buying them and wanted something that would last a lot longer than the average ones. I decided after research that I would make my own to use at home and then all these other creative ideas started popping into my head so I decided to turn them into a product to sell! I have had quite a lot of interest so far and a great buzz!
What makes them different to other products?
They are made with eco-friendly soya wax which is organically created in the US on approved soya bean farms. (The origin is important to me as some soya manufacturers disturb rainforests to expand their development, and that’s something I am strictly against). Soya wax burns at a cooler temperature to paraffin wax, and that results in a great scent and a longer lasting candle. Soya is also a completely renewable resource and this I feel is very important for the future. On another note, the candles come with personalised tags which are magnetic so they double us as a keepsake!
Who’s your role model?
Without a doubt my mum (or ‘mam’ in Welsh terms). She has had a dream all her life and has never given up on it even to this day. My mam is a special woman with no limits to her energy and enthusiasm. She is always there to listen to my challenges and help me overcome them by talking it through.
Who would play you in a movie?
Zooey Deschanel – not only have I been told she is my look-alike (apparently I have very similar, kooky, mannerisms), but she is a positive and energetic character like me!
What’s the biggest lesson you have learned so far?
To follow my gut and realise that anything is possible. Where there is a will, there is a way!
When you’re not working on being the next big thing, what do you do to relax?
To relax I go for a jog in the fresh air or I do a bit of yoga at home, then run a bath with whichever essential oil I feel like using, pour a glass of wine, stick my favourite music on, and lock the door. It’s total ME TIME!
We encourage everyone to do one thing each week to be kind to themselves. What are you going to do this week to #bekindtoyou?
To be kind to myself this week I am going to do some baking and treat myself to some new music.
