How many times have you heard the story about a girl who, having gone to be measured for the first time in years for a new bra, found out that she had been wearing the wrong size for a decade? Bras, as we all know, are a serious matter, and no more so than for mums-to-be – that’s a whole new minefield of issues, as Cake Lingerie explain!
During pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding you can change by up to THREE cup sizes, so a properly fitted maternity bra is unsurprisingly a pretty big deal. A new body shape can be quite daunting, and it needs support in the form of a well-structured bra which will help to avoid ligament damage and prematurely sagging of the breasts (all things we are pretty keen to steer clear of). So you know what you are looking for, a well constructed maternity bra should have a laminated lower cup for added support and lift, cotton lined straps for added strength, stretch in the top cup to allow for small amounts of fluctuation in the breast growth, six hooks and eyes for back band adjustment, feeding clips, drop down cups, a frame for modesty, and cotton lining for comfort and to help keep the body cool.
Importantly, a well-fitted bra should fit comfortably and not irritate (issues that we all face regardless of pregnancy). The cups should fully encompass the breast, there should not be any breast tissue spilling out the top or sides of the cup and nor should there be any extra fabric or wrinkling in the cup. Two give away signs that the back band is not the correct size are that it’s not sitting parallel or that it’s riding up or digging into your back.
In fact, pop in and see us at Cake Lingerie and we will help find you the perfect fit that also happens to be really pretty!
