I have just spent the day with around 20 Orangutans! I am currently in Borneo spending a few days working with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation. Today I have been in the rainforest helping out at Jungle School teaching the young Orangutans some basic skills like nest building and foraging. They will work through various levels of Jungle School until they are ready to be released. This takes a good few years! It has been a amazing day!
Overall I guess it’s the learning experience. I have learnt so much about people and places. I feel like I am growing all the time as a person. Annoyingly that is in more ways than one – people everywhere have been so hospitable that I have actually put on
weight! I really didn’t see that one coming! So much for the ‘round the world diet’!
I have had many strange experiences. One amusingly strange one that springs to mind was when I was staying in Amritsar with a Sikh family who spoke no English. I’m not sure what happened but I think their fan broke in the night (it was extremely hot) so I was woken up at 1am and gestured to get out of the bed. They made me a small bed at the bottom of the bed I had been in then got into mine so we could all sleep together and share the fan. They then proceeded to stare at me and quote the only English they knew which was “cup of tea” over and over again! I didn’t get much sleep that night!
So many that it’s hard to choose. Riding the highest motorable road in the world in the Himalayas, seeing a wild tiger in India… I think the best so far though has to be what I am doing now though, working with Orangutans in the rainforest.
Thats an easy one. When I am riding a twisty dirt track, the sun is shining and I have rock music playing in my headphones.
People who can find happiness in the everyday things in life and get on with it regardless of their circumstances.
I am partial to a local beer at the end of a long days riding. I also like to read and I love to write about my travels.
I guess I am a naturally driven person. It’s not really a choice. I can’t be like the people I admire. I always want more from life! Who knows what will come after this. Perhaps I will get all this adventure seeking out of my system and will want to settle down. Something tells me it will only flame the fire! Watch this space!
I would play myself. That could be my next big adventure!
I love a massage. It helps me to relax. If I could have one every day then I would.
strong, funny, feminine and doesn’t mind getting her hair wet!
I’m going to start by booking myself in for that massage. I believe Indonesia is a good place for one!
