Ever walk into a room and forget why you went there? Lose your keys around the house? Or forget peoples’ names the moment you’ve been told what they are? Well, SHA Wellness Clinic are on the case with a spa break to anti-age your brain…

Reporting in the Daily Mail, Geraldine Bedell, who’s in her 50s, visited the highly acclaimed spa in Spain to test out their programme to identify the aspects of your brainpower that need boosting.

The the new must-have treatment is a neurocognitive and brain stimulation programme designed to do for your mind what most spas do for your body. After all, we all know what to do when bingo wings set in (even if we don’t necessarily do it), but what happens when our brain starts to go a little wobbly? As Geraldine puts it: “If you start muttering ‘oof!’ when you sit down, you can join a gym, take up yoga or go for brisk walks. But what about when your brain goes ‘oof!’”

Taking the brain gym to the next level

This is a step up on the ‘brain gym’ concept that’s been around for a while, and it’s a little more sophisticated than an hour of Sudoku every day. It’s also rather more decadent. Created by Portuguese clinical neuropsychologist and professor at the University of Murcia, Dr Bruno Ribeiro, the programme identifies the aspects of your brainpower (such as cognitive speed, memory and concentration) that need boosting and then offers the therapies to do just that.

Learning new skills improves brain flexibility

You’re assessed using computerized tests, brainwave imaging, and tests to measure the Alpha and Beta waves that these images generate in your brain that reflect different types of electrical activity, all of which prove that you can, as Dr Ribeiro says, consciously alter our brain waves. So, for example, what we do with our time changes our brains, and learning a new skill improves the flexibility of your brain.

Look after the body to look after the brain

The SHA clinic puts heavy emphasis on the relationship between mind and body, nutrition and health, so diet is a big part of the retreat. At the heart of it, Dr Ribeiro is insistent about the importance of eating oily fish. It’s also a wonderful bonus that while you’re improving your brain power, you’re also surrounded by wonderful physical therapies and facilities.

Exercise is key to anti-ageing

“There is a very strong connection between the body and the brain – which is, after all, another part of our body. If we take care of our bodies, our minds have a better chance of being in good shape. At the very simplest level, when you exercise, you pump blood to the brain.” Dr Ribeiro told Bedell. Well there you go then, even more reasons to visit this impossibly beautiful spa, in an incredible climate, featuring spectacular design and the ultimate in wellness luxury.

Can’t think why so many people are desperate to visit, can you?
