There’s something really special about arriving at a spa on your own and knowing you’re set to indulge in 24 hours of ultimate relaxation. If you’re looking for the perfect place to slip away from London life without having to schlep across the country, this is the spot for you.
Within minutes of pulling up the driveway at Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa, it’s pretty obvious what sort of establishment you’re visiting. Set back from the road in the middle of secluded and luscious gardens, you can almost breathe in the relaxation as soon as you put your foot over the threshold.
Bedford Lodge is a four star hotel that certainly lives up to it’s accreditation. From the exceptionally friendly and amenable reception staff to the well considered interior design, the attention to detail of the housekeeping team and the luxurious treats we often take for granted, there’s little left to be desired if you’re hoping to forget that the world outside exists. (Donald Trump had just become president-elect when I visited, so I was keen to pretend that wasn’t happening). The most important thing about a hotel? The bed. And this one was incredibly comfortable and comforting.
The spa itself is situated away from the main hotel, creating a real sense of being removed from the real world as soon as you slip through the door into the spa lounge. The facilities included an experiential hydrotherapy pool (incredible), sauna, steam room, rooftop hot tub and several treatment rooms.
Newmarket is located just over an hour north of London and only 20 minutes from Cambridge, Bedford Lodge is surprisingly easy to get to. It’s a quick cab ride (10 mins) from the train station to the hotel.
There’s a reason The Bedford Lodge Hotel has won awards for its food. Squires Restaurant offers fine dining cuisine without being ostentatious and is complemented by exceptional service from warm and welcoming staff. With an extensive menu, you’ll be satisfied, whether you fancy a light lunch or something a bit more indulgent as an evening meal. I can’t recommend their desserts enough. Ultra yum.
The spa at Bedford Lodge is a Wellness for Cancer Centre meaning it can offer therapies to those who have undergone treatment for cancer. One of the treatments they recommend is the Bowen Technique – a non-invasive remedial therapy using only the thumbs and forefingers to apply very gentle pressure to certain points throughout the body. The provision of a Wellness for Cancer centre at Bedford Lodge affords those who have had a difficult time medically to really indulge in a much needed dose of TLC. Other treatments include hot stone, lavender poultice and aromatherapy massages, to pick just a few off their extensive menu.
If you’re looking for a refreshing stay away from the hustle and the bustle of city living with a spa on hand for ultimate luxury relaxation, you’ll be rewarded by making a trip to Newmarket and the Bedford Lodge Hotel.
