It was a conference centre for a time in the 1960s, before being bought by Veladail Hotels in 1986, and transformed into a country house hotel.

Wellbeing at Down Hall is available in a variety of options, from the 110 acres of grounds and gardens to explore, to two spa experiences: The Eden Spa, and the Barn Spa.
The beautiful grounds lend themselves to gentle exercise and sociable entertainment, complete with two tennis courts, a playing field for football and cricket, a Padel court, Trim Trail, and mapped woodland walk. Inside, there is a gym with all the cardio and weight training equipment you could ask for, as well as an adjoining sauna, steam room, and hydrotherapy pool to help you recover.
The spa experiences sit separately from the gym, and from one another. The Eden Spa is the ultimate wellness escape - a tranquil sanctuary designed to relax the mind, revive the body, and soothe the soul. Spend time in the hydrotherapy pool (36°C), along with a detoxifying steam room and muscle-relaxing sauna. Then, enjoy quiet moments on the private terrace with plush relaxation beds before treatments in their four therapy rooms (three single and one double), using the ESPA product line.
The Barn Spa is a more recent addition, and offers space for intimate and focused relaxation. Tucked away in a serene setting, The Barn Spa is dedicated solely to treatments, offering a peaceful and personalised pampering experience. All about privacy and comfort, there are five bespoke treatment rooms - four single, and one double that’s suitable for couples and 'Mini and Me' treatments. The Barn Spa uses Bramley products in all its therapies, chosen for their shared commitment to holistic wellbeing and environmental consciousness.
One of England’s most established country house hotels, Down Hall sits on the Hertfordshire and Essex border in Hatfield Heath. It might be just 45 minutes from central London, but it feels a million miles away, offering total escapism with its inspiring architecture, and impressive surroundings spanning 110 acres of woodland, parkland and landscaped gardens.
Dating back to 1322, the property's Italianate details have been preserved, while 98 luxurious rooms and suites are at once contemporary, but reflect the grandeur, elegance and character of the historic building. Choose from Mansion House Suites, some with their own fireplace, to Deluxe and Estate bedrooms, and more, for spacious accommodation, much of which enjoys views of the landscaped gardens.
Dinner is served in leisurely style at the Garden Room restaurant, which specialises in exciting dishes from a modern English menu prepared with ingredients sourced from their own vegetable garden. There's also The Terrace for light lunches and cocktails in the open air when the weather allows, complete with an outdoor bar, comfortable furniture, and heaters. The Fox Bar is a stylish space for a wide selection of cocktails, wines, beers, and champagnes, alongside an inspiring bar menu. Afternoon tea is a must, and for those who want to make a day of wandering around the grounds, the hotel can also provide picnics in the summer months.
