Gleneagles frequently asked questions
- Who owns Gleneagles?
Gleneagles has an expansive and famous history dating back to 1910 when Donald Matheson, General Manager of the Caledonian Railway Company, was inspired to create it following a trip to Strathearn. In 1924 the hotel opened, hailed by the press as “the eighth wonder of the world.” Since those early days, the estate has been updated and changed hands, ultimately sold in 2015 to Ennismore, a London-based development company who still own it today.

Overlooking the rather idyllic glens of Perthshire, the very special thing about the spa and leisure experience at Gleneagles is the way in which is caters not only to every person but every health requirement thanks to the presence of a specialist team of osteopaths, physiotherapists, acupuncturists and more, lead by a skilled naturopathic practitioner.
The spa itself has been recently redesigned to become a complete wellness experience that's at once luxurious, holistic and reflects the beauty of the world outside - it is a celebration of health, happiness and life itself.
The spa is separate from the leisure facilities – so there is an exercise pool and gym but once in the spa it is all about relaxing. Here you will find indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, steam room, arctic mist shower, relaxation rooms, a Courtyard Garden and the cherry on top – a collection of tailored ESPA treatments as well.
Sitting separately from the spa, a short walk across the grounds, Gleneagles also has a dedicated beauty offering for guests in the form of Bob & Cloche. Formerly one of the hotel’s gate lodges, it has been transformed into an elegant beauty destination named after two style motifs of the Jazz age – the racy ‘bob’ haircut, and the close-fitting cloche hat. The various beauty rooms showcase bespoke golden framed mirrors, opulent furnishings and a striking colour palette.
Meanwhile, a stylish relaxation area has a roaring fire that makes it reminiscent of a cosy drawing room - perfect for friends to unwind in between treatments. There is also a luxurious dressing room which adds glamour and fun to the ritual of trying on outfits and perfecting a look before dinner.
What makes it Elysium standard?
- Five-star hotel and spa experiences
- A purpose-built spa area
- Unique Bob & Cloche beauty lounge
First conceived as design homage to the French aristocracy’s chateaux tradition, the architecture of Gleneagles is a visual indicator of the five-star service that lies within. Looking out onto three of the top 18-hole golf courses in Scotland (recent hosts of The Ryder and Solheim Cups), the Forbes recognised hotel has 232 bedrooms including 26 suites – all of which enjoy subtly contemporary design with lots of space and soft fabrics.
When it comes to food, Gleneagles guests are spoiled for choice – The Strathearn is the fine dining option with a reputation for excellence. Andrew Fairlie is one of the hotel's top attractions - one of Europe’s finest restaurants. It is an intimate two Michelin-starred gastronomic delight for French-inspired cooking.
There is also The Birnam, which serves French-American dishes using the best local Scottish produce, and is complemented by the American Bar, inspired by the roaring '20s, is an elegant bar with exceptional service and cocktails. Don't forget Afternoon Tea in the Glendevon - an elegant lounge area. Additionally, The Garden Café is a plant-filled cafe for light lunches, coffees and pastries; the Dormy Clubhouse on the golf course; and The Century Bar serves a collection of whiskies as well as food and drink. Finally, Auchterarder 70 is the place for comfy armchairs and fine snacks.
