Hazlewood Castle Spa is owned by Ashdale Hotels, a small group of listed hotels and spas. They bought it in 2008. Martin Wicks is the managing director of Ashdale Hotels and owner of Hazlewood Castle.

How do you get to the Hazlewood Castle Spa?

Getting to the hotel is easy by car, bus or helicopter. If you're driving, from J44 on the A1/M, head towards York on the A64, turn left Tadcaster A659, Sherburn (A162) turn off, then first right to the join the opposite carriageway of the A64, brown signs will then direct to Hazlewood Castle which is a turn off on the left hand side.

Hazlewood Castle permits helicopters to land in the grounds please call ahead for instructions. Meanwhile, the coastliner bus stops at the bottom of our drive, please note the drive is approx. 1.5 miles long so be prepared.

When was Hazlewood Castle Spa built?

Hazlewood Castle has been part of a family estate of the Vavasours since Norman times and was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086. It has 1000 years of history, including Sir William Vavasour's 1290 petition to crenellate his manor, transforming it from a house into a castle. Hazlewood Castle became a hotel in 1997, having had periods as a maternity hospital during World War I and a retreat center for the Carmelite friars. The castle was purchased by the Ashdale Hotels group in 2008 and the spa was added in 2014.

Hazlewood Castle is a four-star hotel with 32 rooms and suites to choose from, including nine in the castle, 12 in the courtyard, and the remainder in the St Leonards extension. The hotel's Vavasour Restaurant is the place to dine, offering a mixture of traditional and modern dishes. There's also a State Drawing Room, Library, Victoria Lounge and al fresco terraces.

The Castle dates back to around 1086, and as an ancient building it is not designed for accessibility. However the hotel has put details in place to support all guests. Accessible information includes:

• There is a local company that offers an accessible taxi that the hotel regularly uses – Calcaria – 01937 54 30 81
• All guests should use the main entrance of the hotel which is clearly signposted. There are 21 steps, the ground is paved and there is a handrail
• The main entrance has two manual doors.
• They also have a secure non-residents car park, a two-minute walk to the hotel
• The car park is illuminated in hours of darkness, as is the walkway to the hotel
• There is a drop off point at the side entrance to the hotel, from which there are 12 steps, the ground is paved, there is a handrail
• There is a wheelchair lift into the first floor of St. Leonard's rooms, which also allows access to the library, reception, restaurant and bar, the key for the lift is available from the reception, it is a flat bed lift and for safety purposes guests must be accompanied by a team member when using it
• Concierge are available for luggage assistance
• Reception has a hardwood floor throughout
• If you arrive from the drop off point via the lift, reception is through the Library and on your right
• The residents bar is on the first floor behind reception
• Familiarisation Tours can be given where required
• The Front Desk, Conference Rooms, Lounges and bar are on the first floor. The covering on the stairs and upstairs corridors in the castle is deep pile fitted carpet
• There are 30 stairs leading to a large landing and all nine castle bedrooms. The steps are 115cm wide and 12cm deep
• To access the St Margaret’s wing, you need to cross a small Courtyard which has block paving. There are two entrances (one at each end of the building) with two steps into the building
• The covering on the floor and stairs is short pile fitted carpet. The ground floor corridor leading to our rooms is 90cm wide
• All stairs within the castle and St Margaret's building have handrails and have white wooden skirting
• All internal fire doors within the castle and St Margaret's building are wood with glass panels
• To reach St. Leonards rooms access is through the library or from the courtyard externally there are 12 stairs between the two floors of St. Leonards, fire doors are wood with glass panels. The first floor has tiled floor and the ground floor is short pile carpet
• There are three sets of public toilets within the Main castle Building, one set in the restaurant and two sets within the conference and banqueting facilities. One set of toilets within the banqueting facilities has a unisex access toilet. The flooring is short pile fitted carpet. There is also an accessible toilet on the ground floor of the St. Leonard's block featuring a low sink
• The Restaurant is situated in the tower cellar, access is external via two steps down or a slope the main door is full glass, access from the main hotel is via reception steps (12 with handrail) There is a Host Station on entry to the
• Restaurant where staff will seat you at a table
• The nearest toilets to the Restaurant and Bar are to the right of the reception
• There is a bar area situated on the first floor level behind the reception
• Table service is offered in the bar
• Lighting is mainly natural daylight whilst for the evening meal lighting is low level with candles on the table

Check-in at Hazlewood Castle Spa is at 3pm and check-out is 11am. Spa opening times are from 10am to 6pm. It is suggested you check your specific arrival times however for your spa break, as well as any changes for bank holidays.
