The Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa is part of Historic Sussex Hotels, a family-owned collection of four hotels in West Sussex. Historic Sussex Hotels is owned by joint Managing Directors, Pontus and Miranda Carminger, supported by their family. They acquired The Spread Eagle in 1957 followed by Ockenden Manor in 1987 and Bailiffscourt in 1993. Now the third and fourth generations of the family, together with the teams, work side by side to evolve the hotels, spas and restaurants.
- How do you get to the Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa?
The Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa is located in the heart of Midhurst, West Sussex. To reach the hotel by car from the M25, take the A3 south towards Guildford and Portsmouth. Exit the A3 at Milford and take the A286 to Midhurst. From Midhurst High Street, turn left after the second set of traffic lights into Knockhundred Row and follow the road up for approximately 250m. The hotel is located on the right-hand side of the road by the Market Square in the old part of town.
By train, the nearest mainline station is Haslemere, approximately seven miles away. Trains from London Waterloo to Haslemere take around 50 minutes, followed by a 15-minute taxi ride to the hotel. The hotel is also approximately 35 miles from Gatwick Airport and 46 miles from Heathrow Airport.

Spa facilities include a fitness suite, pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, a spa garden, and a relaxation area. There are three treatment rooms where therapists use TEMPLESPA products, in a range of face and body treatments.
Children’s swim times are 10.30am to 12.20pm and 3pm to 5pm daily.
The spa works hard to help everyone relax and enjoy a peaceful spa experience, and so they kindly ask that mobile phones are not used in the pools/hot tub/Jacuzzi. Phones and tablets may be used for reading or listening to music with headphones only. If you need to make or receive a call, please step outside to the front of the spa. For the comfort and safety of all families, phones are not permitted during family swim times.

Next to the historic design of the main building, the spa at Spread Eagle Hotel boasts Scandinavian-style architecture with vaulted wooden ceilings housing the fitness suite, pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room - looking out onto a small but perfectly formed garden. Also on offer are exercise classes, yoga and Pilates in a Medieval-style function room that is really something to behold.
Opting for organic British skincare brand Temple Spa, renowned for their use of unadulterated fresh ingredients and taking inspiration from the Mediterranean diet, there are a range of feel-good treatments on offer as well, from wraps and facials to massages, manicures, pedicures and finishing touches.
Surrounded by the picturesque market town of Midhurst, it is fitting that the hotel’s own roots are inextricably linked with the area’s history as a coaching inn dating back to 1430. With leather chairs in the 15th century lounge, oak beams, and a huge open fire it retains its sense of the past not least of all with its Queen’s Suite, said to have accommodated Elizabeth I in 1591. The hotel is dog friendly.
