On the N2 road from Dublin to Derry and Letterkenny, Monaghan is the county town of County Monaghan, and a lesser-known gem for visitors but one that will enchant spa goers in Ireland.
Famous for its ancient lace-making tradition, and known for Carrickmacross Lace, Monaghan is understandably proud of its craft. It even has a museum dedicated to its heritage in Carrickmacross itself. Exhibiting some of Ireland’s famously beautiful landscapes, the area is also peppered with small mountains, lakes and forests.
A small town and county, Monaghan still offers visitors plenty to see and do. Amongst the top attractions are the Monaghan County Museum (especially on rainy days) or a visit to the utterly unique St. Peter’s Tin Church Laragh. Go horse riding at the Mullaghmore Equestrian Centre, race around on quad bikes, stroll through Rossmore Forest Park or visit the sparkling Muckno Lake. Then in the evening, delight in the Victorian wonders and free-flowing Guinness at Andy’s Bar and Restaurant for dinner.
Spas in the surrounding area offer a variety of different places to stay. Many are not in the immediate vicinity, but that simply makes it worth a full day trip to the area as part of a wider getaway. For example, Kilronan Castle on the shores of Lough Meelagh is just under two hours away and is perfect for a long getaway with friends. Similarly, Castleknock Hotel just outside Dublin is a luxurious getaway with an exquisite spa. You could even make a spa road trip out of it!
