We had a really terrible experience with the spa - that we are in the process of a formal compliant and investigation being reviewed.
The spa did not have our booking for treatments. Which would have been fine if they just apologised and allowed some compensation. But the staff did not do this. They put the bookings in for the next day and then told us it was our fault for not calling back up (after spa breaks.com had made the booking and send me an email confirmation of the times) to confirm. The staff they said that I had told them to take us completely off the system so that we could not have the treatments even the next day. The manager refused to speak to us. When asked if we could speak to the manager were told 'she is in treatments until 18:30 and then she leaves to go home'. At no point were we told sorry. Awful customer services on top of not having a nice relaxing spa weekend

Staff were great, the lovely Sophie did my massage exactly how I needed it due to health conditions. She explained everything and checked frequently that I was ok.

Unfortunately the thermal rooms were not working or the jacuzzi, We hadn’t been informed of this at the time of booking or check in, one of my health conditions responds well to heat so I was looking forward to spending some time in them. You get a pre-booked hour in the pool but it wasn’t explained that you only get a lane and other swimmers are using the other lanes at the same time.

We received a very frosty reception when we arrived which was a real shame. The facilities and massage were amazing so I can’t fault that.
We had to ask for a robe and the Prosecco and we’re not told about the gym slot. More communication and better customer service is needed to make the spa experience better.
The bar man was excellent though but it was a shame we couldn’t get snacks in the bar. We were told we had to go to the restaurant.

I was given this spa experience as a gift so i'm not sure how much it cost but i'm sure it wasn't cheap. I have been to a few spa's in the past but unfortunately this was not the best by far.
First of all i had booked a twilight spa with you but then had to call the spa to book the treatments where they told me they didn't have that date and time for the treatments available so we would have to go earlier, which was fine i didn't really mind. When we got there they then said we were booked in twice and could of done the twilight in the end! There were no towels available and i was told to keep going back to reception to see if any has come back, about half hour later we got one between us! and to be honest i couldn't be bothered to keep going out to check. There were no beds to sit on as there were everyone's towels on them but no one actually using them, there were a few chairs which were torn and damaged. One of the saunas was not working. The Jacuzzi wasn't working on the inside only on the outside and to be honest it could of done with a really good clean. Around the pool area and where the saunas are the floor was very wet and dangerous, i had slipped so many times, you couldn't wear the slippers provided just because it was so slippery, you had to be so careful walking around. Quite a few of the other people there said the same, it really need someone there wiping away the water but the whole time we were there this didn't happen. The final thing was the treatment itself. My husband and myself both had a facial which should of been for 25 minutes, My husband said that his was brilliant and the lady was advising him on what he needed to do asked him lots of questions. What he described to me was nothing like what i had or anything like what i have had in the pasted. I was called into the treatment room at 7 minutes past two and then the therapist left the room while i got ready, she then started the treatment at ten past two and the whole treatment was finished at twenty two minutes past two. I know this because it felt very quick and i checked my watch. My husband was in the treatment room about 10 more minutes then i was but at least he had a good therapist and treatment. From facials that i have had in the past and i know everyone does them a bit different this one was very poor.

I had a really relaxing day with my partner.Good location, about and hour from London, although subject to traffic delay’s The hotel is set on beautiful grounds.The facilities are nice and the staff very welcoming and friendly. I had a facial and back massage, my therapist was Amy, the treatment was excellent. My partner enjoyed his but he had 15 minutes less than me with a different therapist; they need to sort out the inconsistency.
We had afternoon tea, this was a bit rushed as the restaurant opened at 2.30 and our treatments were at 3pm, also one of the waiters did not seem to clear about the offer. The spa facilities were clean and adequate for a relaxing day.A good day overall!

I have been to the Berystede many times in the past but probably not for about a year now and wont be returning after my recent experience. Being 5 months pregnant this was our last get away before we become a 3 but what a mistake that was as was so stressful and the opposite to relaxing.
The spa was well over its capacity and couldn't accommodate for the amount of people who were there. I cant go in any of the saunas etc (which do have a good selection) so planned to spend my time on a sun lounger and dipping in and out of the pool but this was not possible. There were no more than 10 sunbeds which were all taken- the jacuzzi was full and no seats available in there so just stood awkwardly not knowing what to do and the pool was full of children playing kicking and screaming so couldn't even go for a nice relaxing swim. The floor was extremely slippery and dangerous although they have signs up to warn you, I think some slip mats need to be laid down as I nearly went over 3 times and in my condition is not on. The treatments were good but think the plastic bags for swimsuits needs to be in the changing rooms and not by the reception so your not carrying your wet costume out and can put it away beforehand.

Dinner was absolute shambles. Food was ok but service terrible. Ingredients missing off plates and when asked for it they tried saying the butternut was inside the mash which most definitely wasn't and eventually bough us the butternut out but wasn't heated up. Staff couldn't understand anything we were saying and English a bare minimum so pointless even having them there apart from clearing plates and bringing it out. Main came out at room temp. Didn't have enough staff for how many tables there were- waited an hour for our pudding- even chased it up after 30 mins and was told it would be coming and didn't check with the kitchen. After 45 minutes I had to get up to find a waiter to discover the order had been forgotten to put through the till. They bought out 2 glasses of champagne for us when we asked for the bottle of Prosecco which was incl in our package. A Waiters phone rung on loud while we were being served and he stop pouring our drinks and went to answer it. We were constantly asked if food was ours as they didn't know which table the food was going to. We were offered a drink after our meal to apologise but the cocktail my partner asked for they didn't have 3 of the ingredients and bar man didnt even know what the drink was and had to read it off the menu. He also gave him cheap whisky instead of the monkey shoulder it stated. We didn't even attempt to go to the spa the following morning as originally planned and breakfast wasn't great- hard overcooked hash browns and a hard boiled fried egg. I had a bit of cooked breakfast, then cereal, then a croissant and had to stack my plates up at the side of the table as weren't cleared the whole time we were there or by the time we left. Struggled to find where the afternoon tea was and staff were vague so i had to ask other staff. Lovely facilities with a wonderful outdoor jacuzzi accessed from inside. Cream tea was delicious and we had as much tea/coffee refills as desired.

I went to the spa with 4 friends. We all had treatments and the therapists and the treatment rooms, reception area and relaxation rooms were excellent and of a high standard. The food and service in the restaurant were also extremely good.
However the thing that let the experience down for us was the pool area. The tiles are very very slippery so you need to be extremely careful walking around. There are a very limited number of loungers so we could not all sit together even if we had wanted to and the jacuzzi was not working and another customer told us it had not worked for a very long time. The thing I should have been told when I booked what I expected to be a relaxing morning however was that from 11-12 there was an aqua fit class in the pool with music and an instructor with a loud microphone. So we couldn’t use the pool or relax together in the jacuzzi as we could hardly hear each other. I’m afraid this spoilt the morning for us as we had been looking forward to a swim and a ‘bubble’ and relaxing together after our treatments.
We may go back again but will definitely check their activity schedule if we do so.

To sum up the spa experience: my wife had requested a face massage. When the therapist went to do massage, she started without removing her make-up. We found the therapist to be in-experienced. If there was a good massage during the whole session it was the pedicure along with the sauna's. In general this was probably not the best of this hotel chain!

Unfortunately I was not impressed with the spa which is a real shame as the hotel and restaurants were lovely. To start there were not enough beds for the amount of people in the spa, we spent all day in the spa and all of the bed were taken by the same people for most of the day. The facilities were not great, only 3/6 rooms were working which meant lots of people trying to squeeze into a small room. Poolside was very slippery with most people nearly falling over, I would suggest some form of mats are put down to avoid an injury. The outside pool was the best bit however again due to 3 of the rooms not working it mean this was very busy and it was difficult to get a chair. One other let down was the pool being open to the public, on day 1 there were 4 kids playing and screaming in the pool for most of the day which made relaxing difficult.

Great facilities, pool path was very slippery when walking around pool. Reception staff very friendly. Therapy treatment which I looked forward to for my birthday treat was very poor. There was no music playing, My massage was very short, therapist massaged one side of neck and rest was a oil rub NOT massage up and down one side of body. Compared to my guest with another Therapist who had music, hot towel and massage of muscle knots. My Massage for 25 minutes unfortunately lasted for 15 mins when timed, compared to my guest who had a full 25-30 minutes. I left very disappointed with this treatment.

On arrival the Spa Reception was not obvious. The staff were polite, the lady who carried out my massage was very quick with the treatment, wasn't too relaxing unfortunately and the gentle music/sounds playing were abruptly stopped and end of treatment was announced then told take my time, to come round to leave (after all I still had 10mins of time to go, I found when dressing and I checked the time). I was collected at the start time for the treatment and not 5 mins beforehand as advised. Then on checking the time at the end was 10 minutes early so the whole treatment given was 45 minutes and not 55 as per the booking. I wasn't advised what products were being used or given any choice to oils or fragrances to be used for the back massage. Apart from this I didn't allow our time here to be influenced by this and still enjoyed the day, not sure I would return to this resort though as I think the facilities need refreshing.

Gorgeous day spent with my Mum in the spa and we had an 85 minute Elemis luxury treatment which included a 45 minute massage and 45 minute facial. I had the Senior Spa Therapist Zoe and she was absolutely brilliant! The food in the restaurant is superb and we got to sit on the terrace in the sunshine which made it very special.
But they're missing some fundamental basics to make this a 5 star spa. There aren't any drinking water machines in the pool area so you have to go back through the changing rooms, back through reception to the treatment room reception to get a tiny plastic cup of water. Tea/coffee are from a vending machine and cost £2 per cup and tasted terrible however we did ask at Reception if the drinks were included and she gave us 4 tokens for the machine. There were no sunbeds/seating outside and it was a sunny, hot day so we walked in the grounds until we found a bench to sit on, however it was clearly the "smokers" bench as it was surrounded by cigarette butts. The towelling robes were white and fluffy, however their towels desperately need upgrading as they were off-white, overused and crispy.

Arrived at venue and had to wait for paperwork to be printed and robe/slippers so was a little late for our treatments due to the Spa. Our massage and facial was very good and we very much enjoyed it! However we then paid for a Luxury Pedicure each and did not feel we got value for money at all. This was meant to be for an hour and mine lasted 40 mins! As I have been to other spas, I did expect more than a quick file, exfoliate and paint. Especially as it states luxury. I did ask what the other pedicure was and difference and was told it was the same just shorter time. Do feel we were cheated on this treatment and won't have it again. The lunch was quite limited but very nice. Staff were very pleasant albeit a little slow.

Been to the Berystede before so new what to expect. The spa is clean and good value for money. The resturant staff perhaps need to be a bit more on the ball esepcially as their clients lunches/afternoon teas are being fitted around treatments. No sense of urgency and forgot to bring things to the table even when repeatedly asked.

Disappointing to say the least.
Started with THE most sullen and unfriendly and unwelcoming receptionist. I honestly thought perhaps one of her parents had passed away that very morning, but when I was dressing to leave she was preparing to go in the gym her shift obviously having ended, and her demeanour had changed completely.
There was a mix up over lunch BUT the staff in the restaurant were lovely particularly the gentleman in charge and a really lovely younger man (with ponytail - a particular pat on the back!) I’m certainly glad I didn’t bump into anyone I knew whilst eating as I was in my white robe & flipflops, face free of makeup, hair scraped back and yet there was many a businessman having lunch and i’d have been mortified had I bumped into a colleague!!!
The swimming pool area looked like a municipal pool with far too few loungers. We had to settle on an upright chair each, not ideal for relaxing on a spa day, but we were quickly forced out of our chairs when aqua aerobics started with pulsating music and a cheery instructor yelling encouragement from the poolside. Luckily we did get loungers during the afternoon having dragged one from the far end of the pool so we could sit together. Never once did we see a staff member to see if there was anything we wanted/needed. Indeed, our tea cups remained on the table next to us from 12 noon until 6pm.
However, credit where credit’s due - our treatments were lovely as were the therapists who performed them.

My husband and I went for a day spa to the Macdonald Berystede (his first time at a spa) and generally really enjoyed it. We were disappointed to find that the hydro pool was broken and much cooler than expected (but not cold), and in the thermal suite, the massage shower didn't and the experience shower was cold. We did both really enjoy the thermal couches and are big converts to those. It was great to have so many sauna/steam options available in the thermal suite. We also really enjoyed the indoor outdoor aspects of the hydro pool. The treatments were great and left us feeling very relaxed. We don't have spa days very often, so I'm not sure how quickly we'll go back as we might try others in the area, but for my husband's first time at a spa, it worked pretty well (above-mentioned issues notwithstanding).

Not very impressed with this spa, changing rooms were filthy, the floor in the spa and swimming pool were so slippy and wet (more than any other spa I’ve been too)
The whole place smelt of mould
1/2 way through the spa experience they had a maintenance issue so all the lights and heat went off in the saunas and steam room which then left a very strong smell of urine throughout the spa.
The treatment was a back massage which was an average massage but nothing amazing. The therapist spoke through the whole experience which personally I’m not a fan off as wanted to unwind and relax.
The hotel and grounds were very striking and gave a good feel but the spa itself let it down.

There are no refreshments whatsoever in the spa only a coffee machine and with a £2 token one gets a half cardboard cup of mediocre coffee. Surely with the price of a spa day coffee should be included - very poor. Included afternoon tea with glass Prosecco was good once it was decided I was entitled to that when I should have had lunch apparently which was never on the cards.

Lovely back, shoulder and neck massage! Pool was a little crowded and did not use the hydrotherapy pool because it isn’t disability friendly. There is quite a large final step down, you need the handrail and the left hand one was extremely loose and unstable! I felt very vulnerable using the handrails and opted not to use that pool in the end.

Booked a over night spa break with 2 25 min treatments, a 3 course evening meal and breakfast for 2 for my boyfriends birthday. Treatments were booked on the first day for 3pm, I called up and changed the time and was told by the male receptionist at the spa that they would change it to 4:30pm when we arrived they said one was changed to this time and the other slot at 3pm was kept I was confused cos I specifically said I wasn’t going to arrive until after 3pm so why tell me 4:30 if only one treatment can be changed. He didn’t specify that only one treatment time would be changed but if I’ve said I wouldn’t make that time why still keep that slot?! Anyway so I had to change them to the following day they told me the times were 12:30 and 1:00pm on arrival to the spa at around 11:00 to use the spa facilities and book us in for treatments we were told again that we’d missed one of our treatments cos they were booked at 10:30am I said that’s not what we booked yesterday there’s been a mistake they said that was the time and I told them check out was 11am so we would never of said yes to 10:30am. So they basically just said they didn’t have no more slots available so I’d paid a extra £50 for 2 treatments and didn’t get them so disappointed no apology nothing. I went to the MacDonald hotel for my birthday trip. Everything was fine apart from the fact that there was a double Aqua class at the pool which we were not warned about either when booking the trip nor on the day when we arrived. Obviously this made it very hard to enjoy the facilities as it is not very relaxing when you are trying to sit and relax but you have an instructor blaring music and shouting instructions. We booked a twin room but were given a double. We switched room and were told a bed would be added. A camp bed was added. Not wanting to camp whilst in a hotel we moved room again finally to an actual twin room. They say our booking said double on their system but we failed to understand why it took so long to give us a decent solution to the problem. My sister ended up losing her coat (in which room we don't know) and it was never found.all three bedrooms that we had I can only describe as tired.. Both breakfast and dinner service was chaotic. Dinner portion sizes were disappointing. We've never been anywhere and felt like it was a holiday camp before. The number of people literally being churned through did not make for a relaxing experience. I've been to busy hotels, but you still get a relaxing stay. This was the opposite. For just over £300 for the stay I'd expect so much more. The only saving grace were the leisure facilities, which were great. Had they not been we'd have been after a full refund.

I have been to the Berystede many times in the past but probably not for about a year now and wont be returning after my recent experience. Being 5 months pregnant this was our last get away before we become a 3 but what a mistake that was as was so stressful and the opposite to relaxing.
The spa was well over its capacity and couldn't accommodate for the amount of people who were there. I cant go in any of the saunas etc (which do have a good selection) so planned to spend my time on a sun lounger and dipping in and out of the pool but this was not possible. There were no more than 10 sunbeds which were all taken- the jacuzzi was full and no seats available in there so just stood awkwardly not knowing what to do and the pool was full of children playing kicking and screaming so couldn't even go for a nice relaxing swim. The floor was extremely slippery and dangerous although they have signs up to warn you, I think some slip mats need to be laid down as I nearly went over 3 times and in my condition is not on. The treatments were good but think the plastic bags for swimsuits needs to be in the changing rooms and not by the reception so your not carrying your wet costume out and can put it away beforehand.

Dinner was absolute shambles. Food was ok but service terrible. Ingredients missing off plates and when asked for it they tried saying the butternut was inside the mash which most definitely wasn't and eventually bough us the butternut out but wasn't heated up. Staff couldn't understand anything we were saying and English a bare minimum so pointless even having them there apart from clearing plates and bringing it out. Main came out at room temp. Didn't have enough staff for how many tables there were- waited an hour for our pudding- even chased it up after 30 mins and was told it would be coming and didn't check with the kitchen. After 45 minutes I had to get up to find a waiter to discover the order had been forgotten to put through the till. They bought out 2 glasses of champagne for us when we asked for the bottle of Prosecco which was incl in our package. A Waiters phone rung on loud while we were being served and he stop pouring our drinks and went to answer it. We were constantly asked if food was ours as they didn't know which table the food was going to. We were offered a drink after our meal to apologise but the cocktail my partner asked for they didn't have 3 of the ingredients and bar man didnt even know what the drink was and had to read it off the menu. He also gave him cheap whisky instead of the monkey shoulder it stated. We didn't even attempt to go to the spa the following morning as originally planned and breakfast wasn't great- hard overcooked hash browns and a hard boiled fried egg. I had a bit of cooked breakfast, then cereal, then a croissant and had to stack my plates up at the side of the table as weren't cleared the whole time we were there or by the time we left. The overall experience was ok. However, it could have been great if attention to detail was given.
We were told we would arrive to a room with a bottle of prosecco each. Rang reception and was told they had decided to serve it with dinner.
Spa appointments for Saturday were rearranged on the day.
Afternoon tea was not arranged, we had to go back and forth to sort this out and this delayed us by an hour, which ruined out dinner plans.
Took spa gowns on Friday on arrival, dropped them in the basket on the way out. On Saturday we were told if you don’t have treatments you cannot get a gown.
It was a busy weekend as they had an event, so Sunday breakfast was quite delayed with a 30 minute waiting time for a table for our group.

We enjoyed enormously my only comment is despite notices saying not to jump in the pool a couple families ignored slightly akward when swimming and children running and jumping. We paid extra for a premium room which was not up to standard. The bathroom tabs and shower handles were very dirty. In some places the dirt was so thick that one had to wonder whether the bathroom should be used. There was also no minibar nor a bottle of water in the rooms which you do not expect from a 4star hotel!

Great stay,friendly efficient staff, lovely hotel. Only negatives, we were upgraded to an executive room, but there were no bedside lamps which we thought was strange & only had the main room light! Saw the maid on the morning who said they must have been taken to be repaired! The quilts & pillows were heavy wadding & not the lighter microfibre ones usually found in hotels & which we found uncomfortable & hot. The restaurant was lovely & we had some nice fish, but didn't expect to see burgers & fish & chips on the menu, more 'fine dining' in a restaurant of this calibre. Great spa facilities & really enjoyed using them, although disappointed the inside jacuzzi was broken! Had a lovely massage by Grace, her technique was great. We would come again - please fix the jacuzzi!!

The meals, restaurant and restaurant staff were really great at this hotel and made our stay very enjoyable .
As I was taking my two grown up children for a treat we had to pay an £87 single room supplement on a room that was not much more for two which reduced the value for money. It’s difficult to understand since we had one less dinner , breakfast and complementary treatment whilst the sheets and room would have been used anyway.
The spa is more like a leisure centre with a rather nice thermal set of rooms on the side. There are lounge chairs around the lap swimming pool but there weren’t enough when we were there . If you have a treatment there is a relaxing area and you get a robe and slippers.
One of the complementary deep tissue massages was excellent but regrettably the other two had no structure to them.
Overall for the amount we paid ( single supplement aside) this was a great overnight stay as long as you manage your expectations in comparison with much more expensive spas.
And as I said the restaurant side was really good.

This place used to be really lovely but they’ve made lots of cuts backs and you can tell... breakfast is now a buffet, and not one of decent quality. Spa facilities are nice but treatments and therapists were awful. My massage lasted 15 minutes instead of 25 - yes I did check the timings. Also when I asked for robes the woman from reception made me walk down and carry all 4 robes and slippers up myself because apparently they had non left in housekeeping... all the way to room 134 - it’s miles away! No fridges in the rooms either. Found a little bug in my food, and my friend found a hair in hers. No point in complaining at the time - obviously don’t want the therapist to come back in and finish the massage, and wouldn’t want to eat from the restaurant. Best give this one a miss, for the same price you can go elsewhere and have a much better experience.

The walls have no soundproofing and so we heard noise late in the night. Our neighbor banged on our wall twice because apparently they could hear us too. We didn't get a good night sleep whatsoever as the temperature in the room became rather thermal. We decided to leave part of the windows opened and fiddled with the Air Conditioner but none of these helped at all. However, the foods and drinks were alright and the service great.

The room was very knackered, broken lamp shades, stained bed linen and bathroom not very clean. Hotel looks grand but needs a refurb hallway floors dirty and uneven total trip hazards and lifts were broken in the part of hotel we stayed in.
Dinner: the starter of soup was awful cheap tinned vegetable soup no bread or nothing just 1 ladle of soup. The main we had steak and chips and had to pay extra for this steak was ok but chips were like crisps and cold and the salad was a bunch of cress.
Desert I had lemon tart and sorbet was ok nothing special and my boyfriend had fruit salad with sorbet which was tinned fruit loads of the juice and a small scoop of sorbet that melted into the fruit juice.
