Review of Mercure Blackburn Dunkenhalgh Hotel & Spa
My partner and I booked this hotel for a relaxing weekend and how wrong we were!
We checked in around 6pm and immediately we felt the receptionist on duty was not eager to help, we asked about our dinner reservation which was made with the original booking and our treatment booking for the next morning she answered with a simple I don’t know you need to go and check. It was here’s your keys and on your way.
We got to our room after trailing through the restaurant/bar area with all of our bags; the room can almost be described as a porta cabin. The door was flimsy and did not shut properly, the curtains had huge holes all over them, the char was falling apart and the wallpaper was peeling off. The room was also opposite the restaurant and bar area so consequently glass bottles smashing within the bins is not what we had in mind for a relaxing spa weekend!
I contacted reception and shared my dissatisfaction, they advised us to bring our bags to change rooms and that they would upgrade us to the “executive” room. Finally we thought we could relax and enjoy the rest of our stay, how wrong we were…
The room we changed to looked okay on entry, bed was fine and bathroom was adequate. The complimentary robes which are provided were rancid, they were supposed to be white instead they were a sickly yellow/brown. On one of the robes a big black stain covered a third of the inside. I repeat rancid.
The TV we had in our room would not work at all which we decided to leave until we were back from our dinner. We made the reservation for dinner for half past 7; we went down to the restaurant and advised of our booking. Room number and names were given but no booking was found, we thought it was a mix up due to the room change but still no booking! We were then showed a table and within minutes a staff member requested to see our room card to check if we were guests. This was extremely embarrassing for us both as they were implying we were lying about staying at the hotel, I have never been more embarrassed in my entire life.
We ordered our meals and they were sub standard, we believed the meat was frozen this of course we had no evidence but with the experience we were receiving it would not surprise me.
We got back to our room around 9:15; I tried to faulty TV again to no avail so I contacted reception and requested two new robes and for somebody to check the TV. After waiting 45 minutes another call was made to reception, no apology was made but I was assured that somebody will be up shortly. At 10:40 I had to make another call to reception and at this point I was loosing my temper, my partner was becoming visibly upset which is not the “relaxing” stay we had in mind. Once more another call to reception was made and finally we ended up having our TV sorted at 11.45pm. Not the relaxing stay we had in mind.
