Harrogate’s spa history dates back to 1571, when its first mineral spring was discovered. More springs were discovered with different waters purported to have different curative powers. Over the next two centuries, more and more visitors came to visit the springs, prompting the development of entertainment and hospitality to accommodate them. By the 1800s there were dedicated spa buildings, including the Royal Pump Room, which now houses the museum documenting Harrogate’s spa heritage.
